This gene encodes α1,3 fucosyl transferase 5 (FUT5). Six α1,3-fucosyltransferases (α3FUT): FUT3, FUT4, FUT5, FUT6, FUT7, and FUT9 are known and confirmed that each enzyme has a characteristic substrate specificity in vitro. In the enzyme assay of recombinant protein, it was found that FUT5 has activity to transfer fucose to GlcNAc of type-1 lactosamine structure (Galβ1-3GlcNAcβ1-3-R) and type-2 lactosamine structure (Galβ1-4GlcNAcβ1-3-R) with α1-3-linkage, regardless of the presence of terminal sialic acid. The activity on type-2 lactosamine structure is stronger than that on type-1 lactosamine structure. In VIM2 antigen synthesis, fucosyltransferase activity prefers the internal GlcNAc (reducing end) residue rather than the penultimate GlcNAc (internal GlcNAc) residue. The amino acid sequence of FUT5 is highly homologous to that of FUT3 (91%), but the expression of FUT5 is quite localized and rarely found in tissue or cells. Accordingly, biological significance of FUT5 is not clarified.
