ST8SIA1、あるいはST8 α-N-アセチルノイラミニドα-2,8-シアリルトランスフェラーゼ1は、シアリル酸をCMPシアリル酸からNeuAcα2→3Galβ1→4Glc-Cer (GM3)に転移する。ST8SIA1はGD3/GT3シンターゼあるいはSIAT8Aとも知られる。ST8SIA1欠損ES細胞はb-シリーズガングリオシドを合成しない。ST8SIA1およびB4GALNT1の二重欠損マウスは主なガングリオシドとしてGM3を発現し致死性の聴原発作を呈する。
