B3GALT6 encodes beta-1,3-galactosyltransferase 6. This enzyme uses Galβ- at the non-reducing end as an acceptor substrate & transfers Gal with a β1,3 linkage to synthesize Galβ1,3Galβ-. This structure is found in the linkage structure (GlcAβ1-3Galβ1-3Galβ1-4Xyl-O-Ser/Thr) between glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate and proteoglycan core proteins.
