B4GALT5 encodes beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 5. The seven isoenzymes of the B4GALT family transfer Gal with a β1,4 linkage to acceptor substrates such as GlcNAc, Glc, and Xly, depending on the enzyme. B4GALT5 use GlcNAc or Glc as an acceptor subsyrate. For glycoproteins, B4GALT5 transfer Gal toward GlcNAc at the non-reducing end of N-glycans to synthesize lactosamine (Galβ1,4GlcNAc) structure. For glycolipid, B4GALT5 synthesize lactosylceramide (Galβ1,4Glc-Cer) by transfering Gal toward glucosylceramide (Glc-Cer) as a substrate. Mice lacking the B4galt5 gene are embryonic lethal.
