Galactosyl ceramide synthase (CGT) belongs to the UDP-galactosyltransferase family and transfers galactose to ceramide, synthesizing galactosylceramides (GalC). GalC are mainly expressed in the myelin of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Lack of CGT lose GalC and GalC-derived sulfatides from myeline glycolipids, demonstrating that CGT is a sole and key enzyme in GalC synthesis. Another gene symbol approved by HGNC is UGT8.
