B3GNT8 encodes UDP-GlcNAc:betaGal beta-1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 8. This enzyme transfer GlcNAc toward Gal at the non-reducing end of four-branched N-glycans in vitro. This enzyme has weak activity toward the N-acetyllactosamine structure (LacNAc: Gal beta 1-4GlcNAc). β3GnT8 has been reported to form a complex with β3GnT2, and this complex has strong polylactosamine synthesis activity against four-branched N-glycans. It is also known that the expression of B3GNT8 gene is significantly up-regulated in colon cancer tissues compared to normal tissues.
