Fringe (lunatic fringe, manic fringe, radical fringe have been identified in mammals) is a β1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase related to synthesis of O-linked fucose glycans on the EGF domain of Notch proteins. Fringe was first identified as a gene induces a mutation of abnormal dorsal-ventral boundary formation in the developing wing in Drosophila melanogaster. The O-linked fucose synthesized on the EGF domain by POFUT1 and fringe that transfers GlcNAc on O-fucose is indispensable for activation of Notch proteins by interaction with ligands such as Delta and Serrate/Jagged.
