CSGALNACT1はchondroitin sulfate N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 1をコードする。コンドロイチン硫酸の糖鎖骨格の生合成には、2種類のGalNAc転移酵素が存在する。1つはGAG-タンパク質リンケージ部分の4糖のGlcA末端にGalNAcを転移するGalNAcT-I活性を有するもの、もう一つは(GlcAβ1,3GalNAcβ1,4)nからなる2糖繰返し構造のGlcA末端にGalNAcを転移するGalNAcT-II活性を有するものである。CSGalNAcT1とCSGalNAcT2はそれらの2種類のGalNAcT活性をin vitroで有しているが、in vivoではコンドロイチン硫酸生合成の開始反応であるGalNAcT-I活性を担うと考えられている。
