This gene encodes the enzyme that is involved in the synthesis of the Type 2 carbohydrate antigen (Galb1-4GlcNAc-R). This enzyme has the activity to transfer Gal from the donor UDP-Gal to the acceptor (GlcNAc-R) by the b1-4 bond. It is also known to be involved in the synthesis of the LACTOSE by binding to the α-lactalbumin and transferring the galactose to the glucose by using the UDP-galactose as a donor. On the other hand, it is also known that in the presence of the α-lactalbumin, the UDP-glucose is used as a donor and the glucose is also transferred to the N-acetylglucosamine.
