ST8SIA4, ST8 α-N-acetylneuraminide α-2,8-sialyltransferase4, transfers sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to the NeuAcα2→3-R and NeuAcα2→6-R structure on glycoproteins, mainly on the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), synthesizing homopolymer of α2,8-linked sialic acid called polysialic acid. ST8SIA4 also synthesizes polysialic acid on O-glycans of Neuropilin-2 (NRP2). ST8SIA4 is also known as PST, SIAT8D, or ST8Sia-IV. Lack of ST8SIA4 impaired long-term potentiation and long-term depression in adult mice. Loss of polysialic acid by double knockout of ST8SIA2 and ST8SIA4 results in early neonatal lethal.
