ST8SIA5, ST8 α-N-acetylneuraminide α-2,8-sialyltransferase 5, transfers sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to the NeuAcα2→3-R or NeuAcα2→8-R structure on glycolipids, synthesizing disialic acid to oligo sialic acid by α2,8-linkage. ST8SIA5 is also known as SIAT8E or ST8Sia-V. Good acceptor molecules for ST8SIA5 are GM1b, GD1a, GT1b, and GD3, suggesting ST8SIA5 as a candidate gene for SAT-III and SAT-V.
