The 3GnT3 (B3GNT3) enzyme transfers GlcNAc to the core 1 O-glycan (Galβ1-3GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr) structure and elongates it to form the elongated core 1 O-glycan (GlcNAcβ1-3Galβ1-3GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr) structure. The 6-sulfated sialyl Lewis X antigen, including the MECA-79 antibody epitope, exists on the elongated core 1 O-glycan. As it has been reported that it is involved as the high endothelial venules (HEV)-L-selectin ligand, which is necessary for the homing of leukocytes.
